Overview of the Food Value Chain in Can Tho
Overview
Can Tho city is at the center of the Mekong River Delta: population 1.3 million people.
Labor: Can Tho University provides high-quality human resources for the agricultural sector. Building capacity through loan projects in Yen currency and other supporting projects.
Developing tourism to local fruit gardens that are typically surrounded by rivers and canals (31 locations) due to a sharp increase in the number of tourists.
Agriculture and aquaculture
Agriculture: Rice production is very popular. More than 10% of rice fields apply the VietGAP/GlobalGAP model on a large scale (2018 reached 25,000 ha). The area for growing vegetables and fruit trees (mango, longan) also expanded, and hi-tech agriculture was promoted.
Aquaculture: The common culture is basa fish and sardines. The seafood processing industry has a nationwide position (accounting for 10% of the national market).
Consumption and Market
Food retail: Markets are getting modernized due to urbanization (13 supermarkets).
Produce sold to other provinces: rice, coconut, orange, pomelo. Popular form: collecting raw materials in the Mekong Delta, preliminary processing in Can Tho. The city's processed seafood products are also growing.
Export: mainly rice, frozen seafood products, and fruits.
Infrastructure
Highway: A highway has been built from Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho. It is planned to extend to Can Tho.
Electricity: Stable power supply, the frequency of power outages is low compared to the national average.
