Supporting brand awareness and consumption of Tam Hoa plum, Ky Son district, Nghe An

On April 14-16, 2022, ABJD joined the delegation of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) to have a working session and field survey at Tam Hoa plum growing area in Na Ngoi commune, Ky Son district.

A. Purpose of the Project:

Step by step building brand identity and stable consumption market for Tam Hoa plums

Of the 21 communes and towns of Ky Son district, 11 are located close to the border with Laos and have a cold climate all year round. Not many plants have adapted to this harsh natural condition, but over time plum trees have shown their suitability to the climate here. Especially, if applied science and technology, plum trees are assessed as having the potential to replicate and develop in many other regions, such as Muong Long, Nam Can, Na Ngoi... Plum trees are easy to grow and do not require complicated techniques, so local people can grow it.

The challenge is that the plum harvest season is very short, peaking in only about half a month from mid-May to early June, so the stages of packing and transporting to the consumer market must take place quickly. Because the road is not convenient, the transportation stage in previous years still faced many difficulties. In addition, Ky Son plums do not have labels to distinguish them from Northern plums, so the consumption market has not been expanded over time. The current form of consumption is only in the form of fresh fruit.

B. Project Progress:

Understanding these difficulties, the AMPF Agriculture Forum of Nghe An province has planned to be ready to support people to consume plums in the 2022 crop. Specifically, AMPF will support packaging, labeling, and transportation. moving plums from Tam Hoa, Ky Son, to Vinh city. Here, it is expected that AMPF will have booths and mobile cars to promote products.

C. Role of JICA and ABJD

Through this crop, AMPF and JICA will know the cultivation productivity and consumption capacity of Tam Hoa plums, thereby estimating the number of unsold fruits to make a plan to contact factories to process fresh plums to make dried fruits. or plum wine… JICA, represented by ABJD, will support the parties in this process.

D. Next Opportunity

Agriculture and tourism combined.

According to a Government's resolution, Ky Son will develop adventure tourism, eco-tourism, and community-based tourism. If it is possible to promote tourism development in parallel with the development of plum and garlic trees, the province will be able to attract many tourists and people will have the opportunity to increase income.
