Japan’s consumer preference and distribution system

In the meeting, Dr. Jiro AIKAWA, Senior Advisor from JICA Head Quarter shared summary of consumer preference and its distribution system in Japan. “After World War II, Japan faced many difficulties, such as food shortage, infrastructure in disarray, hunger, unskilled labor force…, with re-establishment efforts of value chain, Japan agriculture has gradually achieved increasing quality standards, branding, efficiency improvements and differentiation” he said.

From the above speech of Prime Minister Mr. Shinzo ABE, Japan has already implemented sucessfully SHEP_“Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion” Approach to change of farmers’ mind on marketing from “Grow and Sell” to “Grow to Sell” in many countries over the world. SHEP approach will be applied in the project activities.

To understand the Japanese experience from a comprehensive perspective at the national and prefecture level, including the background that led to the promotion of safe crops, promotions policies, the role of relevant government agencies, current issues and proposed solutions, on October 2022, JICA will organize a training in Japan for 18 officers of Vietnam Agricultural Extension System. After this training, Vietnam Agricultural Extension officers will apply the knowledge to work and guide farmers to produce safe and highly economic agricultural products.
