On September 27, in Moc Chau district, the National Agricultural Extension Center (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Son La province, organized a community agricultural extension workshop in Developing fruit material areas and safe crop value chains in the Northern mountainous region.
According to 2021 statistics, Vietnam has about 1.17 million hectares of fruit trees; Of which, the northern midland and mountainous provinces have about 266,000 hectares, accounting for 60% of the fruit tree area of North region. It is also the second largest fruit growing area in the country, only after the Mekong Delta. Currently, there has been concentrated large-scale fruit tree production area in the Northern mountainous region. However, the linkages and product quality here are still unstable due to fragmented terrain and widely scattered farming areas, slowing down the technology transfer process. Therefore, community agricultural extension groups are expected to be an effective solution to promote the development of agricultural production and trade in the Northern mountainous provinces.
JICA Advisors at MARD - Mr. Morita and Mr. Motegi join the panels with National Agricultural Extension Center (NAEC) and stakeholders in fruit value chain to discuss the opportunity and challenges of community agricultural extension in developing fruit material areas in the Northern mountainous region.
